Birdwatching in the Paton’s Yard A trip to the Patagonia area would not be complete without a visit to the Paton residence. This lovely yard, set in a riparian woodland, is both an interesting and a relaxing place to observe hummingbirds. The big attraction, for the hummingbirds, is the great number feeders maintained by Mrs. Paton. In addition to the many species of hummingbirds, you may see a variety of toher birds, including the rare Thick Billed Kingbird, Vermillion Flycatcher or Scarlet tanager. A gray hawk nest nearby. To get there from the center of Patagonia, take Highway 82 as though you are going toward Nogales. Turn right onto Fourth Avenue. Go two blocks on Fourth Avenue to Pennsylvania Avenue. Turn left and follow the road through the dry creek bed (don’t cross if the creek is running). The Paton place is on the left just as you clear the creek bed. You may park along the fence or go through the gate. If disabled, one may drive on into the yard. There no set hours. Visit as early or as late as you please. There is no charge but donations to the “Sugar Fund” are appreciated. Submitted by Marianne Shannon, Patagonia resident. |
